Work Study Stipends for Small Firms
New York Law School has a federal work-study grant. The program is a marvelous advantage for qualifying firms of five or fewer lawyers. The employer sets the pay rate ($12.50 to $30.00 per hour), and the student’s work-study allocation pays a substantial portion of the student compensation. Under the federal rules: for private employers, the work-study grant pays ½ of the student’s hourly wage; for government and non-profit employers, the work-study grant pays ¾ of the student wage! Your organization pays only the remaining fraction (plus payroll taxes). All work-study arrangements must be made with our Office of Financial Aid and requires a limited amount of paperwork to be finished before the student starts working.

Understanding that work-study eligibility is an imperative for many employers, we require all students participating in this recruitment program to apply for a federal work-study grant. During the summer period, well over 90 percent of our students are eligible. Our Office of Financial Aid uses an accelerated its schedule for making summer work-study awards so that employers will know a candidate’s work-study eligibility status before making a final decision to make an offer.

Full summer stipend for government and non-profit positions. The New York Law School has instituted a major summer funding program for students accepting unpaid positions in government or non-profit organizations. The stipends vary from $3,500 to $5,250 (i.e., $10 or $15/hour, for 10 weeks). Once the student has secured a position, he or she may apply for the funding, and award determinations are made on rolling basis.
