New York Law Students at a glance:

Our students value legal experience:

  • Starting in their second year, they can take advantage of our judicial externship program, clinical programs, and workshop classes
  • First-year students are encouraged to compete for our Public Interest Fellowships so that both their practical training and commitment to giving back to the community can begin as early as possible
  • Within nine months of graduation, over 90 percent are employed

Our students are interested in more than typical large firm practice:

  • 55% of graduates work in private practice
  • 18% of graduates work in business and industry
  • 11% of graduates work in government executive and prosecutorial positions
  • 7% of graduates work as judicial law clerks
  • 2% of graduates work in public interest positions
  • 2% of graduates work in academic positions

And without a doubt, they love New York:

  • 92% of graduates work in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut

So perhaps it is not surprising that our graduates include:

  • 150 currently sitting judges
  • The name and founding partners at 14 of New York’s oldest and most prestigious law firms
  • United States Supreme Court Justice John Marshall Harlan; Senator Robert F. Wagner (NY), Chester Carlson, inventor of the xerography photocopying process; Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Wallace Stevens; and Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright Elmer Rice

And the applications keep pouring in:

  • Last year we received over 6000 applications from almost 200 schools representing 31 states and 7 countries for the fewer than 500 seats in our incoming class
