It's Not Politics as Usual in the New York City Council

On Tuesday, September 19, 2006, the Justice Action Center presented, It's Not Politics as Usual in the New York City Council, the first lunch in its Justice Speaks Lunch Series.  Council Member Weprin, New York City Council discussed city government, his experiences on the New York City Council, and his position as the chair of the Finance Committee.  A lively question and answer period sparked discussion on term limits, budgeting, security, predatory lending, and Campaign for Fiscal Equity's remedy.

 

Council Member Weprin is the chair of the Finance Committee and represents the 23rd District which encompasses Hollis Hills, Queens

Village, Little Neck, Douglaston, Bayside, Bellerose, Floral Park, Glen Oaks, New Hyde park, Hollis, Hollis Park Gardens, Holliswood, and Fresh Meadows.  In addition, he sits on the following committees: Contracts; Cultural Affairs; Libraries & International Intergroup Relations; Economic Development; Immigration; Rules, Privileges & Elections; and Small Business. 

Since 1994, Council Member Weprin has served as a Democratic District Leader and Executive Member of the Saul Weprin Democratic Club, named after his late father the NYS Assembly Speaker. Prior to his election to the City Council, Council Member Weprin held worked at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette; Kidder Peabody; Paine Weber, Inc. and Advest, Inc. where he occupied a variety of leadership positions.  Council Member Weprin also served as Deputy Superintendent of Banks for NYS and Secretary to the Banking Board.
