Before applying, consider the following...

  • Have you successfully completed your probationary period within your existing position?
  • Is this position best for you?
  • Will your placement in the position benefit the Law School?
  • Do you have the required minimum qualifications?
  • Is the position one you are interested in?
  • Make inquiries if you are not sure about the position.   Did you inquire about the the position and department before applying?  It may not be the job you perceived it to be and more information on the duties and responsibilities may help you make a more conscious decision on whether or not you should apply to the position.
  • How has your performance been to date?


YOUR RESUME:

  • Identify which of your skills, attributes, knowledge, experience and qualifications match the position's minimum qualifications.
  • Tailor your resume to the position for which you are applying.  Remember, the information on your resume is being reviewed to assess your qualifications against the minimum qualifications established for the position of which you are applying.
  • Describe your experience so that the Human Resources Staffing and Recruiting Manager can see the experience, knowledge and abilities that make you a good candidate for the position to which you are applying.
  • Before submitting your resume, check it over to ensure there are  no mistakes.  Ask someone else to look it over for you, preferably someone who is a good writer.

 

THE INTERVIEW:

Preparing for the interview-

  • Research the position and department prior to the interview.  Know the job description/posting and be prepared to discuss how you meet the minimum qualifications.
  • Know why you want the job.
  • Prepare questions you wish to ask of your interviewer.
  • Practice a firm handshake, while maintaining eye contact.
  • Dress as you would, going for any interview.
  • Arrive approximately 15 minutes early for your appointment.
  • No gum chewing, candy or excessive cologne or perfume.
  • Maintain eye contact throughout the interview.
  • Relax, use mannerly conduct and display body language that demonstrates enthusiasm.
  • NEVER make negative comments about your current department.
