The Mendik Library’s Reference Staff is offering a group of Research Skills Workshops focusing on the practical skills you will need in order to do research for class or for the workplace. Advance Registration is required and if by the morning of the session,  no one has  registered for it, that session will be cancelled.  To register, click on the workshop name.
 
Not all law is made in Congress. Focusing on the CFR and Federal Register, learn the basics of researching Federal Agency rules and regulations.  (5:00 - 5:50 on 6/18)
 
These sessions will be tailored to the needs of the attendees. Topics covered can include: database selection, terms and connector searching, an introduction to segments and fields, advanced connectors, field and segment searching, command stacking and cost effective research strategies.

Federal Tax Research
An introduction to many of the tools with which the Federal Tax researcher needs to become familiar.  Among the sources discussed and / or demonstrated are tax losseleaf services, the tax databases on Lexis and Westlaw and the CCH Tax Research Services. (5:00-5:50 on 6/17)
Getting Started on a NY Legal Research Project
What is the NYCRR, the Green Book, the CLS? Get a quick overview of the major sources used in researching New York legal questions.  (5:00 - 5:50 on 6/2 & 6/12)
 
Law Books Your Boss Uses -- Looseleaf Services
Chances are you be using a Looseleaf Service this summer at work.  If you aren't sure why this is so, or, if you are not comfortable using these invaluable tools, come to this class. (5:10 - 5:50 on 6/9)
 
Loislaw:Low Cost Alternative to Lexis and Westlaw
While having fewer databases and a less sophisticated search capability than Lexis or Westlaw, its much lower cost makes Loislaw a valuable research tool for any attorney or firm.  (5:10 - 5:50 on  6/4)
 Note Taking for Legal Research
 This workshop, which addresses the importance of note-taking from the moment you first receive a research assignment until you report back your findings, will provide you with valuable tips and techniques. (5:10-5:50 on 6/3)
 
Don’t restrict yourself to the tip of the Google iceberg! Learn to use wild cards, phrases, connectors. Set up electronic Google Alerts. Check out Google Scholar and Google Print.
