LIBRARY LOCATIONS: The law library is located on three floors of 40 Worth Street directly across the street from the main campus. The services located on each floor are outlined below.
(1) 4TH FLOOR: Book Collections; Reserve Collection; Circulation Desk, Reference Desk
(2) 7TH FLOOR: Quiet Study areas; Group Study Rooms; Computer Learning Centers; Library Staff
(3) 14TH FLOOR: Quiet Study areas with both table and study carrel seating
4TH FLOOR INFORMATION DESKS:
(1) REFERENCE: Come here for reference information or research assistance of any kind. A librarian is on duty Monday -- Thursday 9-9; Friday 9-6; Saturday & Sunday 11-6.
(2) CIRCULATION: Check out Reserve items and general materials here. This desk is open whenever the 4th floor is open.
RESERVE COLLECTION: Multiple copies of assigned readings and textbooks are kept on Reserve for students to use in the library or take to class. So are previous years' exams and very recent issues of law reviews. You will need to present your barcoded NYLS ID in order to check Reserve items out. They may be checked out for 3-hour periods.
COMPUTER ROOMS:
(1) GENERAL COMPUTER ROOMS: (rm. L403,L714,L1402) Students may use PC's on a first-come, first-served basis. Bring your own ‘memory key’ or plan to save your work on your personal <U://drive >location of the NYLS network.
(2) LEARNING CENTERS: (Westlaw: rm. L715; Lexis: rm. L716) All training sessions are held in these rooms. The workstations can be used for computer assisted legal research at other times.
Training schedules for 1st yr. students are arranged in conjunction with the Legal Writing Program. (see brochure)
(3) PRINTERS: OCE Printers are available in all computer lab areas. Instructions from printing are provided by OIT. The vendor cards used for the OCE copy machines also work for the OCE printers. You can purchase a copy card from the machines in rm. L 402 and L 714.
7TH FLOOR LOUNGE AREA: Daily newspapers, magazines and business journals are shelved in this area.
POPULAR READING COLLECTION: Current novels and other books of interest are shelved in the Popular Reading stacks (near the entrance) on the 4th floor.
RESTROOMS: Fully accessible restrooms are located on every floor in the corridor outside the general study areas.
COPY MACHINES: On each floor, and at Reserve. You can purchase a copy card from the machines in rm. L 40 and L 714 for $1 and then add copies in any monetary denomination. The Library does not make change. Business Operations (6th floor of "A" Building) handles credits & exchanges for defective cards. Please report machine problems to the library staff person at either Circulation or Reference desk (ext. 2333) so that service can be called.
LOCATING & BORROWING LIBRARY MATERIALS
THE ONLINE CATALOG: contains author / title / subject records for all of the books, journals and databases the library owns. Terminals are located on the 4th and 7th floors and through internet access. There is a link to the online catalog on the Library page of the NYLS website. The CALL NUMBERS in the catalog correspond to the ones on the book spines. In addition, the catalog will give you specific location information for each item. The principal locations that you will see are:
RESERVE...................... Near the Circulation Desk.
REFERENCE................... Directly opposite the Reference Desk.
PERIODICALS ................ The most recent, unbound issues of law reviews are shelved in the Reserve area. Articles from older issues are available using electronic databases: HeinOnline; Lexis; Westlaw; J-Stor, etc.
DOCUMENTS ................ U.S. Government Documents - adjacent to the reference collection near the entrance to the library
MICROFORMS ............... Ask at Reference for assistance. Prints can be saved as PDF files.
STACKS....................... The main collection – this designation is used for all items that do not have a "special" location as listed above.
BORROWING LIBRARY MATERIALS: Students may borrow library materials according to the Circulation Rules posted at the Circulation Desk and on the Library homepage. You can check your Library account and renew borrowed items online from Library homepage as well.
SAMPLE AND PRACTICE EXAMS: A complete archive of previously given exams (if released to us by the professor) are available on the Library page of the NYLS intranet. A paper collection of exams for the current semester’s courses is also kept in the Reserve collection – ask at the Circulation Desk.
NETWORK ACCESS
WIRELESS NETWORK: The wireless network is available throughout the Library. Printers are available on each floor. For access information, check the Office of Information Technology manual or web page.
LIBRARY HOURS: Hours are always posted on the Library’s home page under “Hours and Access.” During some reading periods, the study spaces on 7 & 14 may be open after the 4th floor closes.

CELL PHONE USE is not consistent with quiet study and is not permitted in the Library spaces. Please respect your colleagues and turn phones off when you enter.
“HELP PHONES”: On each floor are phones that can be used to dial internal NYLS extensions. If you need help in using the library, use these phones to call the Reference Desk (ext. 2332 or just press “Library Help”).
FOOD & DRINK: Food & Drink are allowed in the study spaces on floors 7 & 14. Food items are not allowed on the 4th floor and beverages must be in the “official” NYLS mug.
