New York City ranks as the number one for bicycle thefts in the United States according to statistics compiled by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform Crime Report (2000).  It is estimated that 15,000 bicycles are stolen in the city each year and only 2 percent are recovered.  Police believe the reported thefts represent about 20 percent of the actual number of bicycles stolen.  So in fact, 75,000 or more may actually be stolen each year.

The New York City Department of Transportation ("NYCDOT") has installed racks throughout the city for the convenience of bicycle riders.  If you use this rack, you must properly secure your bicycle to it.  Click here to enter the NYCDOT bicycle web-site.  For additional information about bicycle ownership issues and security advice, click here.
