JUSTICE SPEAKS: FORCED TREATMENT AND INDIVIDUALS WITH MENTAL DISABILITIES
On Monday, September 10, 2007, the Justice Action Center held the first event in this year's Justice Speaks Lunch Series. Professor Michael Perlin moderated as guests Dennis Feld and Deborah Dorfman discussed the forced treatment of individuals with mental disabilities. Mr. Feld focused on litigation involving electroshock therapy. Ms. Dorfman discussed recently developed--and controversial--set of medical procedures collectively referred to as "Ashley's Treatment." PUBLIC SERVICE DAY
The Justice Action Center and the Office of Student Services cosponsored Public Service Day on Friday, September 28, 2007, in the Stiefel Reading Room at New York Law School. The event introduced students to various public service opportunities in the New York metropolitan area. THE COMMUNITY REINVESTMENT ACT: STILL RELEVANT AT 30?
Our fall symposium, held on Friday, October 12, looked back at three decades of the CRA and investigated whether the CRA can address financial issues facing underserved communities, including reverse redlining, subprime and predatory lending, and international multi-service financial institutions. The afternoon session featured a training session that included an introduction to the CRA, home mortgage lending data analysis, and subprime and predatory lending. CITIZENSHIP DAY
On Saturday, October 13, 2007, volunteer attorneys and student volunteers were at New York Law School assisting lawful permanent residents in filling out applications for citizenship. For more information on this event, please visit this event's page.
JUSTICE SPEAKS: FAMILY RESPONSIBILTY DISCRIMINATION
On Tuesday, October 16, 2007, the Justice Action Center held the second in this year's Justice Speaks Lunch Series. Professor Kris Franklin moderated as guests Joan Williams and Mary Still discussed the family responsibility discrimination. Ms. Williams focused on the litigation being used to address employers discriminating against family members taking time off to care for their families. Ms. Still discussed the statistical correlations between a variety of employment and discriminatory factors, including the rise of women professionals in the workforce. JUSTICE SPEAKS: FRAMING THE DEBATE
On Wednesday, November 7 2007, the Justice Action Center held the last in this year's Justice Speaks Lunch Series. Professor Richard Marsico moderated as our guest Srinu Sonti discussed the how politicials frame and shape the issues for potential voters and their consituents. Mr. Sonti focuses on a variety issues including healthcare for children, the war in Iraq, the upcoming 2008 election, and the battle between political parties for popular support.
