Pile driving on the Church and Leonard Streets site has begun. We have reports from faculty and students that most classes, including those in the large lecture rooms in the A building, proceeded without disruption, or at least without much more than the usual level of noise in lower Manhattan.  As we anticipated, the classrooms that were more vulnerable were the seminar rooms with walls on the lot line:  A500, A602 and A1002.  Since classes in those rooms can be moved fairly easily to other locations on campus, we have decided to do that; the resulting location changes are listed below.

We will continue to monitor the situation next week.  In the meantime, thank you for your patience and good cheer about life in the big city.

Classroom changes in effect, beginning Monday, September 17:
A500
Legal Writing - D1 WF 9:15-10:30 to B310
Corporate Governance T 11-12:40 to Boardroom*

A602
Justice Action Center Capstone - WR 12:50-1:50 to B310
Islamic Law M 2-3:40 to B310

A1002
Drafting: Litigation R 9-10:40 Boardroom*
Legal Writing - WF 9:15 - 10:30 - B410
Labor Relations Law - TR 2:30 - 3:45 to Boardroom*
*The Boardroom is located on the 14th Floor at 40 Worth Street.

Construction work is underway at the corner of Church and Leonard Streets, next to the Law School. Alexico Group, the developer of the site (which is not owned or controlled by the Law School), conducted some pile-driving tests in August, just prior to the beginning of the school year. Based on the noise generated by that activity, the Law School requested that they inform us of what to expect in the coming weeks. We were told that Alexico is in the process of finalizing permits, so they don’t have specific start dates to share. They were able to tell us, however, that they expect to begin pile-driving sometime between September 4 and 20, and pile driving will take place on their site for 6 to 10 weeks. They are likely to work from 7 a.m. to about 3 p.m. every weekday. Simply put, it is likely to be noisy at a very inopportune time for us.
We are exploring ways to minimize the effect of the noise on our day-to-day activities, especially in the classrooms. We are sharing our academic calendar with Alexico to alert them to the timing of mid-terms; they may be able to schedule quieter work for those times. In addition, we are looking into alternative locations for the classes most affected by the noise. Because the actual start of the work and the amount of distraction it will cause are unknowns at the moment, we are doing our best to be prepared with options.
Construction noise is one of the unpleasant parts about being New Yorkers. We ask that you be patient during this phase. As for our own building project, we are happy to report that we are not using a pile-driving approach and work is proceeding smoothly.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
