"Inheritance, Disinheritance, and Why your Parents Don't owe You a Thing" One of the distinguishing features of our legal system's rules for the passing of property on death is what we call "testamentary freedom" which means that we don't have to leave anybody anything (with the exception of a surviving spouse).  That means not only that a parent can disinherit a child but that the parent can require the child do something if he or she is to receive an inheritance.  in the case we're going to discuss, the parent in his will requires his son to marry within the family's religious faith.  Is that requirement legal, that is, will it be enforced?  The answer may surprise you.

Is There Life Outside the Classroom? What do law students do when they're not studying? Where do they live? And how do students find out when free food is being served at a law school event? Program in Law and Journalism  You love keeping on top of the news, watching it on TV, or reading it online (or even, some of you, in print).  You've always thought it would be fun to be in the news business.  And you'd love to combine your expertise in the law with a career in the media.  But how?  One key thing you'll need to do:  write clearly.  Not the kind of writing you'll learn as a 1L, writing memos to the court, but the kind of writing about the law than an audience of non-lawyers will understand.  So you can communicate with your audience effectively.  And keep your audience coming back for more.  Find out about PLJ's array of coursework, projects, and externships at top media companies.  Get yourself published online or in print, with work you can be proud of, and which helps you market yourself.  You'll be glad you did.

Why Every Lawyer Needs to Know Tax Law  Should you advise your client to accept the $2 million settlement being offered in the lawsuit that you are handling for him?  Is is better for a new business to be operated through an LLC or a business corporation?  Is the alimony being offered to your other client enough to pay for her to go back to school and to finish her graduate degree?  Your new client wants to know if she should invest in municipal bonds -- what should you tell her?  Should you get married on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day?  The answer to all of these questions is that it depends at least in part on the tax consequences.  What every lawyer needs to know about taxation is that there are tax consequences to consider in practically every business transation and transfer of money and also in an amazing range of personal decisions.  The basic course in federal income tax can help you become the lawyer whom your clients want you to be.  Find out about TAX 1100, the extraordinary number of advanced tax and estate planning courses for JD students at NYLS, and the Graduate Tax Program for those students who discover that tax or estate planning is the field for them.

Who Gets the Ring When the Engagement is Off? Ever wondered, as you imagined opening that small square box with the beautiful (and perhaps pricey) twinkling ring inside, what would happen if things didn't work out?  Would you get to keep it, if he disappeared with your best buddy a week before the wedding?  Would you get to, if you ran off with his best man?  What if it fell through for more mundane reasons - one or the other or both of you just decided it wasn't going to work?  You find out you are allergic to his cats, and he can't bear to give them up?  Does it matter how much it's worth?  Does it matter if it has your names engraved in it?

Does the law have an answer?  Is it the same everywhere, or would things be different if you lived in Connecticut or New Jersey or Colorado?  Come and find out, before it's TOO LATE and that gem is gone!
