The Center for Professional Values and Practice  Wondering what you will do after law school?  Interested in learning about the future of the legal profession?  come hear about innovations and changes in the global legal services market-- and what they mean for your career.  The Center for Professional Values and Practice (CPVP) focuses on the future of law practice and law-related services in the US and abroad.  Based on case studies, legal press coverage, and cutting-edge empirical research, students learn about the conditions of practice in a wide variety of traditional and non-traditional practice settings -- from the court room to the board room to emerging virtual networks and legal process outsourcing firms.  The goal of the Center is to provide students with a sophisticated understanding about the conditions of modern law practice to equip students for successful careers in the next generation of law practice organizations.

The Center for Real Estate Studies Do you want to be a real estate developer?  Engage in high-level real estate finance? Negotiate complex commercial leases?  Participate in the development of land use policy? Or represent the buyers and sellers of major office buildings?  You'll learn about the Center for Real Estate studies and the comprehensive real estate curriculum offered as well as the professional development tracks available for JD students -- including the new LL.M. program in Real Estate Law.  As an extra treat, we'll discuss NYLS's recent major construction project (185 West Broadway).  Named "Deal of the Year", this project involved creative financing, sale of development rights, land use planning and a team of top attorneys to get it all done.  It's the perfect example of what makes the study and practice of real estate law at NYLS so exciting!

Finding Legal Information in the Electronic Age  DRAGNET, FDSys, Lexis, Westlaw and Google!  Maybe BNA, Bloomberg, CCH or Hein?  Where do we find the law these days?  The legal research landscape is changing at a rapid pace.  This session, held in one of the Library's new Electronic Research Classrooms, will offer a hands-on tour of some of the many legal electronic resources and tools now available.  What will be in your toolbox?

From Fashion to Cyberspace  Want to write a blockbuster novel?  Videogame? Movie score?  Or represent the people who do?  Then come learn about the intellectual property law curriculum at NYLS and such cutting-edge courses as Intellectual Property and International Intellectual Property, Cybercrime and Cyberterror and Innovation and the Law.  We'll talk about opportunities to use what you learn in practice through our professional development job tracks in videogame law and fashion law and to work at the intersection of intellectual property and new technology on world-changing projects for the White House and the Patent Office.

"Inheritance, Disinheritance, and Why your Parents Don't owe You a Thing" One of the distinguishing features of our legal system's rules for the passing of property on death is what we call "testamentary freedom" which means that we don't have to leave anybody anything (with the exception of a surviving spouse).  That means not only that a parent can disinherit a child but that the parent can require the child do something if he or she is to receive an inheritance.  in the case we're going to discuss, the parent in his will requires his son to marry within the family's religious faith.  Is that requirement legal, that is, will it be enforced?  The answer may surprise you.

Is There Life Outside the Classroom? What do law students do when they're not studying? Where do they live? And how do students find out when free food is being served at a law school event? The Office of Student Life, which includes the Housing Office, can provide answers to these questions, along with other important considerations such as student health insurance, international student concerns, services for students with disabilities and the general campus community.

Justice Action Center  New York Law School's Justice Action Center ("JAC") engages students with a dynamic program that explores the relationship between social justice and law.  JAC faculty members are committed to developing socially conscious lawyers dedicated to utilizing law as an agent of social change.  JAC Faculty work closely with students to study and work in the areas of anti-discrimination law, civil liberties, criminal law, economic justice, educational law, environmental law, family law, immigration law, international human rights law, labor and employment law, mental disability law, and social change advocacy.  JAC offers students a diverse array of projects to bring together the theory they learn in JAC's curriculum with practical experience in clinics, externships, project-based learning courses, placements, and employment.  In this session you'll learn more and participate in part of a typical class! 

Lawyering Skills Center  Interested in represnting clients while still in law school?  Then you'll definitely want to learn about the various clinics offered at NYLS.  Come and hear NYLS Clinic alumni talk about their experiences while involved in the Criminal Defense Clinic, Elder Law Clinic, Mediation Clinic, Securities Arbitration Clinic and Urban Law Clinic.  Alumni will speak on the incredible opportunities they gained as a result of their experiences in the NYLS Clinical Program.
