Bar Exam Champions

Six years ago, the NYLS Alumni Association began a tradition—providing support and encouragement to recent graduates as they prepare for the New York State Bar Exam. This summer, the #NYLSBarExamChampions Program continues.

Our bar takers are hard at work preparing for the exam on July 30 and 31. Your gift helps provide lunch on the exam days, plus other essential bar prep resources. And this year, members of the Board of Trustees will match every dollar raised up to $50,000, so your gift goes twice as far.

Make a gift here. We and our future lawyers thank you!

Reflections From Moshe Katz ’19

Moshe Katz ’19 quoted I felt blessed to be part of an institution that recognizes the success of its students is the success of the school. … I have little doubt that I will carry this experience with me throughout my lifetime.
“As a February 2019 bar taker, I want to thank New York Law School and the alumni who support the Bar Exam Champions Program. NYLS went above and beyond my expectations, from providing Adaptibar to incorporating bar preparation classes into the curriculum, hosting bar events, sending encouraging emails, initiating contests, and covering the cost of our lunches for the exam, just to name a few.

“What stood out to me most was the presence of NYLS administrators, faculty, and alumni at the exam. There were well over 1,000 students at my exam location, representing dozens of law schools from New York and across the country. And yet, only one law school sent friendly faces to greet us with signs and welcome treats: NYLS.

“I felt blessed to be part of an institution that recognizes the success of its students is the success of the school. I don’t think I could have gained a more enriching law school experience. I have little doubt that I will carry this experience with me throughout my lifetime.”

At NYLS, Katz was a Pro Bono Scholar who took (and passed) the February 2019 bar exam. He now serves as an Assistant Corporation Counsel in the New York City Law Department’s Tort Division.

The Bar Exam Champions Program has had five successful years. With your help, we’ll make it six! Why do alumni and friends give to the program, year after year? Below, five all-star supporters weigh in.

Summana S. Abdul-Hasib ’13 “I remember the bar exam vividly—the adrenaline on the first day and the exhaustion on the second day. Luckily, because of NYLS’s Bar Exam Champions Program, I also felt relief that I didn’t have to worry about lunch. I’m proud to support the program. If I can help a fellow NYLS grad feel just a little less stressed while taking the exam, I’m all for it. Giving back and staying connected to NYLS are important to me.”

Abdul-Hasib is an associate at Hoffman & Kessler LLP.

Susan J. Flynn-Hollander ’85“The idea for the Bar Exam Champions Program was first suggested at an Alumni Association Board meeting as we sat sharing a box of pizza and exchanging thoughts on how we, as a group of caring alumni, could encourage NYLS bar takers. That was five years ago, and the first year’s effort—a small group handing out boxed lunches at the Javits Center—has burgeoned into a rollicking bi-annual success that is the much-copied envy of other local law schools. As a loyal alum and the mom of an NYLS grad (Jeremy Hollander ’05, also pictured), I am proud to salute our #NYLSBarExamChampions. Jeremy and I wish them every success. Bon appetit!”

Flynn-Hollander is Director of the New Jersey Innovation Institute and Privacy Officer for the New Jersey Health Information Network.

Joam Alisme ’14

Joam Alisme ’14“Preparing for the bar exam can be, to put it mildly, trying. One of the ingredients for bar prep success is a strong support system. NYLS’s Bar Exam Champions Program played an important role in supporting me when I sat for the exam. As a graduate, I continue to donate to make sure that the program is available to other alumni. They’re part of the NYLS family, and I want them feel as encouraged as I did.”

Alisme is an associate at Ganfer Shore Leeds & Zauderer LLP and a member of the NYLS Alumni Association Board.

Emilio Fernandez ’94“The bar exam can be a lonely experience. What I love about NYLS’s Bar Exam Champions Program is that it’s intended to alleviate that stress by showing bar takers that they aren’t alone; they have the support of the whole NYLS community. NYLS was very good to me. I’m proud to be associated with the School and happy to give other alumni this kind of opportunity.”

Fernandez is President of North American Title Insurance Company and based in Miami, Florida.

There is no feeling quite like being alone in that huge room surrounded by hundreds of other candidates. The Bar Exam Champions Program provides not only lunch, but also great comfort and encouragement on those ever-so-stressful days. We’ve been very happy to support this wonderful program. It’s small things like this that make NYLS a community.”
