Join Anna G. Cominsky ’05 (moderator), Associate Professor of Law, New York Law School; Mildred Morillo ’15, Criminal Defense Trial Attorney, New York County Defender Services; and Irwin Shaw, Attorney in Charge, Criminal Defense Practice, New York County, The Legal Aid Society; to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Gideon v. Wainwright, the landmark Supreme Court decision which held that the Sixth Amendment requires counsel be provided to criminal defendants who cannot afford one. The discussion will focus on the history of this seminal case, what the right to counsel looks like in practice, and how lawyers and advocates work to preserve the legacy of Gideon amidst efforts to undermine it.
