Despite the adoption of the Genocide Convention and the Geneva Conventions following World War II, atrocity crimes— namely genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and ethnic cleansing—have continued, killing millions of people worldwide. Thus, the phrase, “Never again,” remains elusive.
Castro Wesamba, the Chief of Office of the United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect, will provide background information on atrocity crimes and describe the response by the United Nations and international law. He will also explain the work of his office in preventing such crimes and discuss the concept of the responsibility to protect as a way to address atrocity crimes
