Israel is debating a radical judicial overhaul which has ignited a firestorm of controversy and could set off a constitutional crisis. Supporters say they want to curb judicial overreach, while opponents argue that the reforms are meant to severely weaken the judiciary and leave almost no checks on the government’s powers.
Dr. Hassan Jabareen, a Visiting Scholar at Columbia Law School and General Director and Founder of Adalah, a human rights and legal center based in Haifa, Israel, will discuss this controversy along with its implications, especially on the rights of Palestinians who are citizens of Israel and also those who are living under occupation in the 1967 Occupied Territories.
Lecture Chair: Ruti G. Teitel, Ernst C. Stiefel Professor of Comparative Law at New York Law School; Director, Center for International Law and the Institute for Global Law, Justice, and Policy; and author of Globalizing Transitional Justice (Oxford University Press, 2014)
