Facial recognition technology (FRT) is one of many technological tools that law enforcement increasingly relies on in its initial investigations, but at what cost? Cases of misidentification and wrongful arrests occur when law enforcement, subject to automation bias, fail to take one or more basic investigative steps. Join us for a presentation by Jerome Greco ’11, Supervising Attorney at the Legal Aid Society’s Digital Forensics Unit, followed by an audience Q&A moderated by Professor Gaynor Cunningham, Co-Director of the Post-Conviction Innocence Clinic.

This event will discuss the rise of FRT in criminal cases and investigations; explore the constitutional implications of this technology; examine the racial, gender, and cognitive biases inherent in most applications of FRT; and explain what challenges to FRT––both inside the courtroom and at a policy level––are being raised.
