The NYLS-Everytown for Gun Safety Legislative Advocacy Clinic will launch this fall and already has a wait list. It will be the only law school clinic in the country exclusively dedicated to gun violence prevention advocacy.
Through the clinic, NYLS students will perform legislative advocacy work across the country to influence state legislatures on gun safety reforms, including background checks for gun purchases, keeping guns away from domestic abusers, and preventing dangerous laws from being enacted. Students will also have the opportunity to continue working with Everytown through an externship in the spring.
The clinic will be taught by NYLS Adjunct Professors Jonas Oransky and William Rosen, both of whom are Deputy Legal Directors at Everytown, where they lead a team of lawyers on a large portfolio of policy work and legislative advocacy.
“In the wake of yet another deadly school shooting, words alone are inadequate,” said NYLS Dean and President Anthony W. Crowell. “Now is the time for action. Lawyers have a vital role to play in ending the devastating gun violence epidemic. We are proud to partner with Everytown, and with Professors Oransky and Rosen, on this critical work.”
“Every day, 96 Americans are killed with guns—and that has everything to do with our broken gun laws,” said Everytown President John Feinblatt. “Thanks to this clinic, a new generation of lawyers will receive the knowledge and experience they need to create and push through good laws—and fight dangerous ones.”
