NYLS Response to Recent Natural Disasters

Message from the Dean

Dear NYLS Community,

The devastation wrought by recent hurricanes, tropical storms, and earthquakes has caused a great deal of worry in our community. Aside from the profound humanitarian concerns we all share, many in our community have family and friends who have been directly impacted in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Cuba, St. Maarten, other parts of the Caribbean, and Mexico. Our hearts go out to all those affected, and we stand ready to assist.

Many of you have asked ‎where you can make donations. Charity Navigator lists organizations doing good work on the ground in affected locations. The site is a useful tool to determine which of these groups, if any, you might want to support.

As a community dedicated to legal education, we have both an obligation and an opportunity to teach students how lawyers can offer special assistance and expertise in the wake of crisis and disaster. To that end, we will coordinate a series of master classes for those interested in learning more about the practical legal issues related to crisis management, disaster response, and recovery.

We ask everyone to keep those affected by the disasters in their thoughts and to look for appropriate actions they can take to provide relief.
