Join New York Law School (NYLS) Associate Dean and Professor Heidi Brown for an engaging, discussion-based session on how generative artificial intelligence (AI) is showing up in the legal profession and what future lawyers need to know.
AI is changing how legal work gets done, but it also raises important questions about accuracy, judgment, and responsible use. In this session, Professor Brown will break down the basics and share practical examples of how these tools are being used, and misused in the legal world.
Topics will include:
- Understanding generative AI: What it is and why it matters for future lawyers.
- Prompt engineering: How to give AI tools better instructions for legal tasks.
- When AI goes wrong: Real examples of lawyers, self-represented litigants, expert witnesses, and even judges facing consequences for misusing AI.
Whether you’re curious about AI, unsure what to make of it, or simply want to be better prepared for law school and legal practice, this session is a chance to learn, ask questions, and join the conversation.
Heidi K. Brown is Associate Dean for Upper Level Writing at NYLS. A prolific scholar and author on the art and science of legal writing, she has published four books on predictive and persuasive legal writing and federal litigation and three books about well-being for law students and lawyers.
Since 2023, she has designed courses, workshops, webinars, and continuing legal education (CLE) programs on GenAI literacy, “prompt engineering,” and the ethical and responsible incorporation of GenAI tools into the legal research and writing workflow.
