This course examines the legal and practical issues arising in the development and production of film and television projects, with a focus on the lawyer’s role from project setup through the completion of principal photography. Building on the foundational principles introduced in Entertainment Law, the course emphasizes real-world application in a production environment, including content review, rights clearance, and on-the-ground legal problem-solving.

Students will explore the legal frameworks governing film and television production, including location agreements, releases, talent and crew agreements, and union and guild requirements. The course addresses key issues such as filming in public and private spaces, risk allocation, as well as the legal implications of depicting real people, brands, and third-party content on screen.

Particular attention is given to clearance and content review, including potential claims for defamation, invasion of privacy, and infringement, and the steps required to mitigate risk prior to distribution. The course incorporates an experiential, problem-based approach through simulated production scenarios and pre-production script review.
