Independent Study

This course requires authorship of a significant paper representing substantial legal research, the work involved being equivalent to a two-credit course including preparation for classes and examination. Topics must receive prior approval, and the writing must be supervised by a faculty member. Students may not take more than two Independent Study papers except under extraordinary circumstances and only with the approval of the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. This graded writing and research course is directed by the student with supervision by a faculty member.

Recommended for the following Professional Pathways: Available to all students with prior approval from the supervising faculty member and completed form that is accessible on the Forms for Students section on NYLS Portal under Student Resources .
