Potential Clients for Nonprofit and Small Business Clinic
The Nonprofit and Small Business Clinic provides no-cost legal services to qualifying small businesses, entrepreneurs, and nonprofit organizations in New York City.
Clinic’s Services
The Nonprofit and Small Business Clinic provides services on fundamental transactional and business law matters, including legal entity selection and formation; governance (by-laws, operating agreements, policies); drafting, reviewing, and revising agreements and form documents.
Law students, under the supervision of a practicing attorney, take the lead in representing clients. The students enroll in the Clinic for the academic year (September through April) and receive credit and a grade for their participation.
The Clinic does NOT litigate matters, create business plans, develop loan packages, or prepare tax returns. For intellectual property matters, please reach out to our specialized clinics.
Client Selection and Application Process
We routinely receive more requests for our services than we can handle. We select clients based on a variety of factors, including the anticipated educational benefits to the Clinic students and whether the prospective client can otherwise afford to pay market rates for legal services. Generally, the Clinic’s services are best suited for for-profit businesses that have started providing goods and/or services, and nonprofit organizations that have received or identified guaranteed sources of funding.
To apply for our service, complete our online application form, as completely as possible. Given the volume of applications we receive, we may not be able to respond to all applications. Though we accept applications year-round, the Clinic is open only from September through April.
