Event Details

In March 2021, Archegos Capital Management made global headlines when its leveraged bets on Wall Street, worth tens of billions of dollars, and then crashed and incurred huge losses for its lenders. The U.S. Justice Department has filed criminal charges against its charismatic founder, Bill Hwang, for market manipulation, conspiracy, and securities fraud, among many other crimes, while the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission filed various civil complaints. Professor Robin Meister will describe the market impact of the Archegos implosion, the actions of its global counterparties, and examine whether Wall Street is sufficiently balancing risk with the pursuit of profits.

Robin Meister ’86 is Adjunct Professor of Law at NYLS and serves as an independent director for a public fintech company as well as for a dedicated multi-strategy family of funds. She was recently highlighted as a Director to Watch: Gender Diversity in Directors Boards.
