The New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) is a global financial regulator that protects consumers and ensures the soundness of New York’s financial institutions—from small check cashers to large and complex foreign banks with New York branches—which have trillions of dollars in combined assets. It does so by issuing charters, licenses, and regulations, and by carrying out examinations, investigations, and enforcement actions.

Elizabeth Nochlin ’91, Director of the Investigations and Intelligence Division at DFS, will give an overview of the Department’s work and discuss its role in managing financial risks in the face of quickly evolving innovations, such as those concerning digital assets and cybersecurity, among other topics.
