Professor Michael Pastor Offers Expertise in New Interview

Through the James Tricarico Jr. Institute for the Business of Law and In-House Counsel, New York Law School aims to serve as the preeminent thought leader and training center for law students and in-house practitioners. With a deep commitment to NYLS’s vast alumni network and the broader in-house legal community, the Tricarico Institute will focus on professional excellence, integrity, and innovative lawyer leadership.

Made possible by a substantial gift from distinguished alumnus James Tricarico Jr. ’77, the Tricarico Institute is a community for law students and lawyers with diverse educational, professional, and lived experiences to develop and refine their legal knowledge, skill sets, and expertise with the deployment of innovative technologies and networks to thrive as 21st century in-house professionals.

Setting the Foundation for In-house Success of NYLS Students

Our comprehensive curriculum places emphasis on experiential learning and hands-on field work. Through active outreach to NYLS alumni in in-house positions and the promotion of the Institute’s work more broadly, the Institute works to identify externship and internship opportunities for students in corporate settings, government settings, and nonprofit settings, such as the hospital sector.

The Institute offers specialized pre-professional programming for future in-house counsel.

“Boot Camp” Series

Beginning in 2022, the Institute will offer a “boot camp” series to NYLS students preparing for in-house roles as externs, summer interns, and first years. The series will teach substantive, technical skills while also giving guidance on skills like communication, leadership, collaboration, and meeting management that will help students be both productive and good team players within in-house settings.

Mini-M.B.A.

In 2021, NYLS debuted the inaugural “Mini-M.B.A.,” an intensive course on substantive topics of business law and matters that are prerequisites for in-house success: communication skills, negotiation primers, and legal technology. The “Mini-M.B.A.” is now an annual that gives students skills and understanding that will make them stand out among applicants and excel once hired in in-house roles.

The Tricarico Institute as a Preeminent Thought Leader and Training Center

The Tricarico Institute is a high-caliber forum for members of the in-house community to come together to engage, learn, and grow. The Institutes programming and engagement with the in-house community aims to support excellence not just at the School but in the broader profession.

Thought Leadership Events

The Institute plans to hold multiple events to elevate the profile of NYLS, to grow the network of professionals engaged with the Institute, and to further excellence in the broader profession.

In 2021, the Tricarico Institute hosted the first Tribeca Cybersecurity Summit which brought together leading executives in in-house roles, at law firms, and in tech-related positions to engage the pressing topic of cybersecurity, including representatives from organizations such as Guardian Life, Via, Deloitte, and Kroll. The Summit, which was held over two days on our campus, will be held annually going forward.

Tricarico Council

New York Law School has a robust network of alumni who have gone on to impressive careers as in-house counsel in leadership roles or as senior executives in roles that benefit from a legal training. Beginning in 2022, the Institute will convene an Alumni Council to engage with each other and establish a mentoring framework for students looking to learn from seasoned in-house lawyers. The Council will convene in person twice a year.

A Force for Positive Organizational Change

The Tricarico Institute will work to break down barriers to access for students of color and first-generation law graduates and train future in-house leaders who will carry the mantles of equity and fairness.

Supporting Students From Underrepresented Groups

First-generation college students, LGBTQ law students, law students of color, women, veterans, and law students with disabilities are less likely to have easy means to connect with alumni with whom they can identify to guide them as they learn about, and later pursue, in-house careers.

Through engagement with the Tricarico Institute Board of Advisors, the Tricarico Alumni Council, and other professionals in the Institute’s network, the Institute creates a nucleus of mentors for these groups that will force multiply over time and host career events to create new mentoring opportunities.

Tricarico College Fellows

The Institute is in the process of creating a program paired with the City University of New York system or Long Island University whereby students from underrepresented groups can pair with NYLS student mentors. This mentorship will be supplemented by personal support from the Director—the mentor and the director will engage with the student to support their potential pursuit of a law school education.

All NYLS students are welcome to apply to join the Institute as affiliates. Affiliates must meet curricular and extracurricular requirements, found on the Academics section of the NYLS Portal. Students may not join or transfer to the Institute during their final semester of law school.
