The expansion of cultural heritage claims across many jurisdictions, including the United States, coupled with an increased focus on anti-money laundering rules, has heightened the importance of provenance research in artwork transactions for market participants, attorneys, and regulators.

Alongside the professionalization of provenance research, distinct legal and practical questions have emerged, such as how to handle documentation requirements and which resources are available for researchers and market participants. This program examines both the legal doctrines involving provenance research and the practical considerations collectors, museums, appraisers, auctioneers, art galleries, regulators, and lawyers face.
