Law and the Good Society
How does the law impact a Utopian mission? In this course, students will read classics of Utopian literature and explore case studies of attempts to build utopian societies. They will also explore whether some utopian communities failed because of the law or its absence. Examples of topics that may be covered include rules that govern a cooperative agricultural community and agreements for people living in "gated communities." Legal issues, such as rules of exclusive membership, religious freedoms, compliance with state or federal laws, and adherence to democratic and due process principles, will also be explored. After introductory readings and assessment of examples, students will develop topics for their written final papers. This course can meet the writing requirement if a student wishes to meet all of the NYLS criteria.
